Nestled between the rugged Pyrenees mountains in the north and the wide expanses of the Ebro river valley to the south, lies the Spanish autonomous region of Navarre. The name conjures up images of medieval castles and ancient legends. Forested mountain slopes hide countless villages that maintain the old traditions but Navarre has set its face towards the future.
Navarre has always been pulled in conflicting directions. The northern half is Basque, and the language and customs draw it toward neighboring Basque Country region. But in the south people speak Spanish, and identify with the rest of Spain.
In spite of the differences, people take great pride in being Navarese. They relish their culture and traditions. Pilgrims hike through Navarre on the ancient Way of St James. and the Festival of San Fermin in Pamplona is famous worldwide for the running of the bulls.
But the Navarrese are also leaders in Europe in renewable energy, and are close to becoming self sufficient.
Though tradition is strong, many Navarrese are abandoning religion. An increasing number of people claim no religious affiliation, even more than in the rest of Spain. The evangelical church has seen recent growth, but is still a very small minority.
Pray for the region of Navarre. Pray that the natural beauty will lead people to acknowledge the creator. Pray that the search for self sufficiency will be replaced with a need for a Savior. Pray also that God will send workers to the towns and city, who can start churches, and that the Navarrese can find their identity in Christ alone.
