The Community of Madrid is located in the very center of the Iberian Peninsula and is home to Spain’s capital city. Even through changes in culture, language, kings and rulers, it has benefitted from its strategic location and its people who are always on the search for improvement.
From north to south, the region is home to three World Heritage sites: The monastery and royal site of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, the cultural site of Aranjuenz, and the university and historic sites of Alcalá de Henares. The Influence of the Catholic religion and political power are very evident in each of these sites, and even now one can feel the legacy that for centuries denied it’s inhabitants the freedom of personal opinion. As a result, of the more than 6 million inhabitants, only a few thousand confess a living faith in Jesus.
Major universities as well as the most important national media are are based in Madrid, as are the parliament and the monarchy. The Catholic bishops still have a great influence, though most young people have abandoned religion. Soccer is the real religion, raising passions like no other. We pray for a holy passion that removes the scales blinding the spiritual eyes of the people of Madrid, oversaturated with messages but lost in their search for meaning.
The people of Madrid are mostly Catholic, atheist or agnostic. Most know very little of the person of Jesus and the Protestant faith. The evangelical church faces the great challenge of deeply rooted traditions, all sorts of urban sub-cultures, and the social inequality that challenges all European capitals.
Madrid is proud of its art and the many museums and galleries. Philosophers like Ortega and Gasset, writers like Quevedo and Calderón de la Barca are all products of Madrid, the product of its creativity and ambition. But people seek the meaning of their existence in books and diversion, when Jesus is the real answer.
Lord, we pray for the people of Madrid, for each heart of this diverse community. We ask for renewed strength for the churches in Madrid and the birth of new churches that communicate the gospel message with authenticity and relevance, reaching families from all social levels. We pray for the youth, that you will speak to them, and that they can find in you a friend for eternity. We also plead for wisdom for the government leaders in Madrid, that they will walk into the challenges of the future in your light. In the name of Jesus, amen.
