Jutting out of the northeast corner of the Iberian Peninsula, the region of Catalonia stands apart from the rest of Spain. Its identity is wrapped up in the independent spirit of its people and their unique language. Diligent stewards of their resources, Catalonia has led Spain in industry since the 19th century, and its economy is among the strongest in the country. As the Spanish economy continues to struggle, many are pushing to restore their historical identity and gain independence from Spain.
Catalonia is proud of its wines, as well as its architecture and art. Visitors to Barcelona wonder at Antonio Gaudí’s masterpieces like the house of Batlló, the Sagrada Família cathedral, or the Güell Park. The Dalí museum in Figueres shows firsthand the life and work of this famous Catalan artist.
Barcelona is also the home of the Nou Camp, the largest football stadium in Europe, where every week thousands of fans cheer their team. However, it was the 1992 Olympic games that brought international fame to the city.
Pray for a religious awaking that will free Catalonia from ancient religious ties. Ask God to send Christian workers who can live among the Catalans and exemplify the love of God. Pray for new churches across Catalonia that can be a light for a new future.
