The Balearic Islands are the easternmost autonomous region of Spain. It is an international tourist destination made up of Formentera, Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and other small islands. Its popularity with tourists has brought many changes. In the past there was peace and tranquility, but now it has an excessive night life and large land developments.
Palma de Mallorca, the bustling capital of the islands, preserves the remains of a Spain’s turbulent history, and the inseparable tradition of Catholicism. The cathedral and basilica of Santa Maria of Palma de Mallorca are the symbol of that tradition, and arquitectural icons in their own right. King Jaime I had it built over the ruins of a mosque to fulfill a promise to the Virgin Mary.
The enchantments of the Balearic Islands include its small towns and ports, the pure air of the mountains, and the peaceful secluded beaches. The islanders love the peaceful life, though their history and tourism have given little opportunity.
The Balearics value their history as seen in the high level of preservation of prehistoric ruins in Menorca.
In the city of of Mahón the first evangelical church in Spain opened its doors in 1868. Since then the number of believers has increased, and there are now almost one hundred churches. But still more than 98% remain in their traditions or are indifferent to the gospel.
Pray for the one million Balearics who are not yet born again. Pray that God will send workers to the towns without any witness, some with more than 20,000 people. We plead that this land, so privileged by the sun and the sea, we come to discover the greatest of privileges: the peace of God.
