Asturias. Home of miners and farmers. Green mountains blanketed in pine forests and nourished by the morning mists. Rugged coastlines populated by hardy fishermen, for whom the rough Atlantic is just a day’s work. Cities with a long history and modern amenities.
But the beauty and grandeur can’t hide the reality of daily life in rural Asturias. Young people flee the simple but hard life of the countryside for better wages in the city, leaving small towns with only the elderly and their memories. The coal mines, once the backbone of the economy, are bowing to international pressures and closing down, and angry miners find themselves deprived of the only way they know to earn a living.
Another harsh reality of Asturias, is that despite the ever-present reminder of God’s creative hand, most people give little thought to His existence. The reality of Asturias is that there is very little witness of the saving grace of Jesus, and in many regions, none at all. This is especially true in Tineo, Lena, Aller and Valdés.
Tineo is one of the largest municipalities in Asturias, and also the name of the largest town. The 10,000 residents in this region have no access to any evangelical church. In the middle of economic despair, there is no voice proclaiming hope and peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
Pola de Lena is another town with no gospel witness. The region boasts of scenic beauty, historical landmarks, and a peaceful lifestyle. But the decaying towns reveal the disturbing changes facing the people here.
The municipality of Valdes, in north central Asturias boasts of a beautiful port, as well as charming farming villages. Luarca, a popular vacation destination has a small gypsy church, the only evangelical witness of the gospel in the whole municipal region.
What hope can we offer the people of Asturias? How can we help? One person can’t solve the problems of a whole region, but one person can pray. You can pray. Pray for the families who are hurting, for the economy, and for the many who need the saving grace God offers.
Pray that God will prepare people to receive His message, and pray that God will send workers to start a church in each of the municipalities of Tineo, Lena, Aller and Valdés.
Pray that God will build His church in the small towns of Asturias.
